How to Stop the Breastfeeding Guilt?

Hectic hormones, postpartum depression, lack of sleep and a new baby. All these can lead to feelings of guilt when it comes to not being able to breastfeed. Lets talk about how as a mother we can stop feeling guilty and enjoy this precious time with your babies.

Why do mothers feel so guilty about not breastfeeding their newborns? It's a common misconception that it has to be an all-or-nothing decision and these misconceptions can hold us back. If there is some guilt weighing on you because it seems like everyone else knows what they're doing better than yourself, then read through our thoughts which would help put things into perspective!

Society pressures mothers into believing that they need to breastfeed to give their child the best start in life, but where does that pressure come from? Is it society? Is it family? Or is it mainly us as mothers? There is not one single answer for this question but normally we are the first ones to judge ourselves, when we do not fit the society’s mould.

We all know breastfeeding is the best thing you can do for your child. But it’s not always possible, and sometimes formula is a better choice than breastfeeding. It’s hard to feel good about that decision when everyone around you seems to think breast milk is the only way. It can be really frustrating and embarrassing when people say things like “stop giving her formula! That stuff is bad for babies! She/He needs breast milk!” You don't have to feel guilty about giving your baby formula. Breast milk and formula are both known as good sources of nutrition for babies. There are many different types of formulas that should suit any family's individual needs

The first step to overcome that guilt is to understand why you are choosing formula over breastfeeding, when you understand your WHY, then you can put things into perspective and give yourself a break. There are so many reasons why new moms choose not to breastfeed their newborns. It is often difficult, time consuming and inconvenient for the mother or sometimes even painful if they have certain medical conditions such as nipple sensitivity which can make breastfeeding an uncomfortable and very painful experience. These days there are a variety of options that provide your little one with all-natural milk including formula or pumping using either manual pumps or electric ones.

Mothers know how important it is to be able to maintain some sense of normalcy after giving birth and how hard parenting can be, so we want to encourage new mamas to make decisions based on their own situation- without feeling guilty about any choice they might take along with them. The most important thing is that whatever decision you end up making fits well into your life plan so everyone involved will feel comfortable in their choices and supported by others around them
